competition + niches Flashcards
community
assemblage of pops. in given area
types of ecological interactions
neutral, competition, herbivory, predation, parasitism, disease, mutualism, commensalism.
modes of competition
contest, resource, intraspecific, interspecific.
contest competition
direct aggressive interaction. winner gets “fill portion,” loser gets little to none.
resource competition
indirect interactions using a common resource. if one uses more, less availability for others, equal suffering.
intraspecific competition
amongst members of same spp. affects only the pop. in question.
interspecific competition
among individs. of diff. spp., with similar resource requirements. affects all pops. involved.
what do all competition types have in common?
reduced fitness for all (lose-lose game)
restrictions in intraspecific
pop. growth, individ. growth, tendencies of self-thinning. (successful grow, unsuccessful die off)
principle of competitive exclusion
interspecific competition affects spp. w overlapping niches
what are niches?
env. factors influencing growth, survival + reproduction of spp.
also, what is a niche?
an n-dimensional hyper-volume
what factors affect performance + survival?
temp., pH, nutrient availability, food types + sizes
fundamental niche
describes full range of conditions a spp. uses
realized niche
smaller than fundamental. restricted by biotic community.
