Phonemes
smallest units of sounds in words
Morphology
study of word structure and the meaning of the word.
morphemes
smallest units of meaning in a word, prefixes, suffixes, and roots.
Syllables
are units of pronunciation having one vowel sound, with or without surrounding consonants, forming the whole or a part of a word.
Onsets
beginning consonant and consonant cluster.
Rimes
are the vowel and consonants that follow the onset.
how to teach morphology
use compound words, and prefixes suffixes, and roots.
segmentation
breaking a word apart, this can be done by breaking compound words into two parts segmenting by onset and time, segmenting by syllables, or breaking the word into individual phenomes.
isolation
separate word parts
deletion
omitting a sound in a word or when students take words apart, remove one sound, and pronounce the word without the removed sound. Usually practiced orally.
Stages of second language acquisition: Pre-production
the learner watches and listens in an attempt to absorb the language, aka the silent stage.
Stages of second language acquisition: early production
the learner starts to use some words but has not yet mastered forming sentences. Using pictures is helpful.
Stages of second language acquisition: speech emergence
the learner uses simple sentences that may or may not be correct. He or she begins to understand simple phrases in this stage.
Stages of second language acquisition: intermediate fluency
the learner has a much better grasp on the language as he/she begins to comprehend information taught in the second language and speaks in longer sentences.
Stages of second language acquisition: advanced fluency
the learner can speak and understand the new language with little to no support. this is when students demonstrate cognitive language proficiency to go beyond the basics and think/respond critically.
