Competency 4.1.4 Flashcards
Forms of Protective Eyewear
- spectacles,
- goggle
- shields
How is suitability of Safety Eyewear Established?
- working environment is often risk assessed by a safety officer who is able to assess the needs of a safety spectacle which may result in a material and frame being specified on the voucher
- if the patient is e.g. self employed then a comprehensive risk assessment should be undertaken
Energy Impact Spectacle Markings
A - High energy impact
B - Medium energy impact
F - Low energy impact
S - Increased robustness
T - Tested at extreme temperatures
Resistance Spectacle Markings
K - Resistance to surface damage
N - Resistance to fogging
G - Resistance to radiant heat
Number Spectacle Markings
3 - Liquid droplets (e.g cement)
4 - Large dust particles
5 - gas/fine dust particles
8 - Short circuit electric
9 - Molten metal/hot solids
Safety Specs Materials
- CR39
- Polycarbonate
- TRIVEX
CR39 Safety Specs Material
- Standard plastic
- Not a safety material
- Classified as low impact by BS EN standards
Polycarbonate Safety Specs Material
- n=1.586 so is lightweight
- Low Abbe number (V=30) so poor peripheral performance
- Has some UV protection
- Impacts cause grazes, not breakages
- Soft material so good for resisiting impact
TRIVEX Safety Specs Material
- Strong
- Light and thin
- High impact resisitance
TRIVEX Advantages over Polycarbonate
- Higher Abbe number so therefore better peripheral performance
- Increased scratch resisitance
- Better chemical resistance
Recommendations Based on Profession
- Carpenter – advise side shields, markings: A 4 5 K
- Builder – advise goggles, markings: A 3 4 5 N K
- Welder – advise face shield, markings: A 9 K G
Legal Responsibilities With Safety Specs Dispenses
- The wearer has obligations to wear the protective eyewear when required and in the manner that they were issued
- protective eyewear can be dispensed by anybody
- there is great potential for liability on the part of suppliers so over yourself with notes
Snow Skiing Dispensing
- Commonly supplied in goggle form and where a prescription is required inserts may be used
- grey tints should be suggested grey reduces the Visible Light Transmission (VLT) across the spectrum
- Polarised lenses may also be used under these conditions, but these tend to mask small contours on the slope
