Who is the Secretary of State?

A

John Kery: works with foreign governments as an ambassador to attend international meetings, broker peace deals, and negotciate treaties (doesn’t need the President). Voice of the country, speaks for the interest of the US to the rest of the world, appointed by the President, expected to follow the policies the President has laid down. Advisor to the president so he is aware of what’s going on all over the world.

Who makes up the Executive Branch?

A

President and Vice President

Cabinet

Ambassadors (live in other countries)

National Security Councils: advises President on matters of foreign policy. They are not as well traveled as Secretary of State, give expertise about different going on’s in the world.

A

In Embassies. Ambassadors attend oficial functions in their adopted countries and speak for their countries in international meetings

How does the legislative branch play an important role in US foreign policy?

A

Senate is responsible for approving treatings and approving Ambassadors that have been appointed by the President. Both houses of congress have committees of law makers who specialize in foreign policy in foreign business issues and conflicts. These committee members may travel to other countries, but do not have the voice or responsibility that ambassadors have

Do governors and law makers of states have trade agreements with other countries?

A

Yes on a smaller level than national agreements. A sister city is when a city in the US adopts a city in another country to exchange ideas, goods, services, and technology.

How did foreign policy change from before the WW’s to AFTER the WW’s?

A

Before the 2 WW’s, the US practiced Isolationsim. During WW’s, they recluctantly became allies to England and other allies. After WWII, Stalin of Russia declared publically that capitalism and peace could not happen at the same time. George Kennan who was a diplomat in Russia proposed the goal of the US to limit the expansion of Communism. The truman Doctrine (President Harry Truman) was a policy committed to stoppin the spread of communism throughout the world. Then the Marshall plan was put into affect.

A

American diplomat (ambassador) in Russia during WWII whose goal became to stop the expansion of communism and led to the Truman Doctrine

A

President Truman committed the US to a policy that would stop the spread of Communism throughout the world

After 1945, social and economic chaos continued in Western Europe. Countries were trying to rebuild their cities and their ecoonomy, and their governments, especially Germany. Secretary of State George C. Marshall realized that the US had to help Europe in order to keep Communism from spreading there. He came up with the European Recovery program called the Marshall Plan where the US assissted Europe in regaining economic stablility, especiialy in Germany. Who eventually helped US do this?

A

Proposed by Secretary of State George C. Marshall after WWII to have the US assist Europe in regaining economic stability in order that Communism would not spread there.

Politically: many countries have embraced the ideals of the American democracy

Economically: Market economy that offers free enterprise

A

Economically: goods form other countries have taken over many areas of the American eocnomy, particularly cars, computers, cameras, mobile phones from Japan, china, India, Taiwan

Politically: Main influence on US was Soviet Union’s and Communism during the Cold War. This forced the Americans to follow foreign policy of preventing spread of Communism called Truman Doctrine

A

International organization, head quartered in NYC, founded in 1945, began with Representatives with 51 countries. Today, 192 countries

How does the UN work?

A

At the top of the UN hirerarch is the UN Security Council. 15 members. 5 are permanet and can veto any UN resolution. These 5 members are US, UK, France, China, and Russia. The other 10 members are elected for 2 year terms. General Assembly has member from every country. The Secretary General is administrative head of entire UN.

A

they are the administrative head of the entire UN. Spokes person for UN, serves a 5-yr term and can be reelected by the General Assembly. **By Tradition, the Secretary General is not one of the 5 permanet members on Security Council.

A

This is part of the UN, but its headquarters are in the Netherlands, this quart tries perople suspected of international crimes.

A

keep peace throughout the world, each of the member nations send armed forces to be part of the UN peace keeping force which sends troops to conflicts in the world that are violent.
