Compendium 1 Flashcards
Levels of anatomy ?
- GROSS ANATOMY: structures examined without the aid of a microscope
a) systemic: body is studied system by system
b) regional: body is sturdied area by area - SURFACE: study of the external form of the body and its relation to deeper structures
- MICROSCOPIC: structures examined with the aid of a microscope
- DEVELOPMENTAL: structural changes that occur in the body throughout the life span
What is physiology?
Study of the function of living things
Levels of physiology?
Molecular Cellular Systemic Neurophysiology Renal Cardiovascular, ect
Molecular level to cellular level?
Molecules (DNA) combine to form organelles (nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic) of a cell
Cellular level to tissue level
Numerous cells (smooth muscle cells) join together to form a tissue (smooth muscle tissue)
Tissue level to organ level
Tissue (can be more than one type) form organs (bladder)
Atomic level to molecular level?
Atoms (carbon, hydrogen, oxygen) interact to form molecules (DNA)
Organ level to system level?
One or more organs (kidney, uterus, bladder) make up a system (urinary)
System to organism level
Organis
Characteristics of an organisms?
1) ORGANISATION: Relationships among the parts of an organism and how those parts interact to perform specific functions
2) METABOLISM; chemical reactions taking place in an organism
3) RESPONSIVENESS: organisms ability to sense changes in its environment and adjust to those changes
4) GROWTH: increase in the size or the number of cells
5) DEVELOPMENT: changes an organism undergoes through time
6) REPRODUCTION: formation of new cells or new organisms
Homeostasis?
The existence and Maintenance of a relatively constant environment
Near an ideal normal (set point)
Directional terms:
Superior: towards head
Inferior: towards tail
Anterior: towards front
Posterior: toward back
Proximal: nearest
Distal: distant
Medial: towards midline
Lateral: away from midline
Superficial: close to surface
Deep: inferior
What is anatomy?
Scientific discipline that investigate the structure of body parts and how they relate to eachother
