Scrooge believes the poor are idle and it is their own business to look after themselves. He chooses to not help them as he thinks that it is not his responsibility.

When the Ghost of Christmas Present throws Scrooge’s own words back at him, Scrooge realises he has chosen not to help the poor in the past and think the prisons or workhouses should look after them. He feels guilty for making such choices after seeing Ignorance and Want.

Fred describes how he forgives Scrooge for his unpleasant behaviours and attitude towards him as he feels sorry for Scrooge because his frugality only punishes himself.

Scrooge’s most particular friend has no interest in attending his funeral creates pathos and makes the readers feel pity for Scrooge as he does not have people who feel compassion towards his death.

The charwoman does not feel sorry stealing from Scrooge as she thinks that she has a right to take care of herself just like Scrooge has.

Scrooge wishes he has treated the carol singing boy differently when he was at his door. He regrets the way he treated him.

Scrooge feels guilt hearing his own words said by the Ghost of the Presence when he knows that Tiny Tim will die in the future.

Scrooge feels sympathy for the struggling poor so he decides to help the Cratchits by raising Bob’s salary.
