Comparisons Flashcards
Comparisons
comparing two parts of a sentence. They must be parallel both logically and structurally. Look for comparison markers such as (as, like, unlike, than). These are the most common. Less common are (more/less than, faster/slower than, different from and in contrast to/with).
When to use “like” to compare
When comparing nouns/noun phrases.
EX. Like Preston, Becca likes ice cream.
Preston and Becca (Nouns) are being compared.
When to use “as” to compare
When comparing verb phrases.
EX. As Preston did, Becca liked the ice cream.
This time, the verb phrase “as Preston DID”. This is a verb phrase. Therefore you must use “as”.
GMAT TRICK - Comparing two non-like things
EX. Jayce’s shot, with it high arching trajectory, is better than Fred.

Use superlative “the highest, strongest, fastest” when comparing 3+.
