a comparison of two unlike things that continues throughout a series of sentences in a paragraph
Extended Metaphor
A metaphor that has lost its imaginative effectiveness through frequent use
Dead Metaphor
a metaphor that leaps from one identification to a second identification consistent with the first
Mixed Metaphor
an extravagant, implied metaphor that uses words in an alien or unusual way
Catachresis
A type of metaphor in which the part stands for the whole, or the whole for the part
Synecdoche
Similar to synecdoche, but the metaphorical image is associated with, but may not actually be a part of, the object it describes
Metonymy
Similar to a simile, but explains further the thought process that went into the comparison
Analogy
a substitution of a less offensive word for one that is considered offensive
Euphemism
abstract ideas and principles are described in terms of characters
Allegory
a figure of speech in which two vastly different objects are likened together with the help of similes or metaphors
Conceit
a story, usually short and simple, that illustrates a lesson
Parable
the depiction of a strong connection, link, or bond between the different senses
