Comparison of global disaster risk calculations Flashcards
1
Q
Disaster risk calculators
A
1) DRI - focuses on human imapcts and human exposure. Vulnerability calc depends on five socio-economic and environmental indicators (Scale 0>1)
2) Hotspots report- focuses on human and economic losses and GDP/population exposure. Vulnerability is the vul. coefficient from historic losses.
3) WRI = calculates the probable risk of a country being affected by a disaster - focuses on vulnerability causes - calcs. no. of people exposed to each hazard/year. Vulner. is a fnc equally weighting the susceptibility, coping and adaptive capacity.

Q
Comparisons of the data
A
- Inclusion of hazards in DRI, WRI and Hotspots report varies, as do the methods and measures used for quantifying the hazards
- VUlnerabiliity parameters are also different: DRI = populationl Hospots = Pop and GDP; WRI = susceptibility, coping and adaptive capacities.
- DRI and WRI are only at national scales; though Hotspots does have sub-national resolution even though H/E/V data are at different resolutions.
- ALl assume that hazards act separately in a multi-hzard environment instead of interacting and cascading.
- Hazards are difficult to compare becasue they have different scale, RTs, intensities and impacts.
