compare and define Flashcards
memorize
biotic and abiotic
biotic
-living/has lived
abiotic
-not living/has never lived/ is neither dead nor alive
community and population
community
-many of the same population
population
-many organisms of the same species
autotroph and heterotroph
autotroph
- makes its own food via photosynthesis
- turns sunlight into chemical energy
heterotroph
-has to consume food for energy
food chain and food web
food chain
-one chain
food web
-multiple intersecting food chains
producer and consumer
producer
-produces its own food
consumer
-consumes its food
herbivore, omnivore and carnivore
herbivore
-eats plants only
omnivore
-eats plants and animals
carnivore
-eats only animals
niche and habitat
niche
-an animals’ behaviour with food and other animals
habitat
-where an animal lives
intraspecific competition and interspecific competition
intraspecific competition
-when animals fight for a resource in their species
interspecific competition
-when animals fight for a resource between other species
carrying capacity and population
carrying capacity
-environment is the maximum population size of the species that the environment can sustain indefinitely, given the food, habitat, water, and other necessities available in the environment.
population
-multiple organisms of the same species
extinct, extirpated, endangered, threatened and special concern
+ invasive keystone native and indicator
extinct - none of the species exists anywhere, anymore
extirpated - species don’t exist in a certain place anymore but still exist in other places
endangered - species that faces extinction/extirpation.
threatened - A species at risk of becoming endangered if limiting factors are not reversed.
special concern - A species with concerns that make it sensitive to human activities or natural events.
Invasive Species
A non-native species that causes harm to the ecosystem in which it has been introduced to.
They tend to take out native species, often because they themselves have no natural predators in the new ecosystem or they produce faster than the native species do.
Ex. zebra mussel in Lake Erie.
Native Species
One of the original inhabitants of a country, especially a nonwhite as regarded by European colonists or travelers.
An animal or plant indigenous to a place.
Indicator Species
Thought to be sensitive to and therefore to serve as an early warning indicator of environmental changes such as global warming or modified fire regimes.
Ex. Frogs because they live in water and land, their thin skin is sensitive to changes in water and air.
Keystone Species
A species whose addition to os loss form an ecosystem leads to major changes in abundance or occurrence of at least one other species.
Ex. sea kelp, otters, stars,etc.
sustainability and biodiversity
sustainability - how an ecosystem renews its resources
biodiversity - the variety of life in an ecosystem
biosphere 1 and biosphere 2
biosphere 1 - the earth and the atmopshere lithosphere hydrosphere and geosphere
biosphere 2 - man made in arizona
nitrogen fixation, nitrification and denitrification
nitrogen fixation - nitrogen to ammonia or another molecule
nitrification - ammonia to nitrate
denitrification - nitrate to molecular nitrogen
algal bloom, phosphorus and eutrophication
algal bloom - rapid increase of algae in the aquatic ecosystem
phosphorus -
eutrophication - too much algae, algae die and take all oxygen with it, oxygen gone and animals die
