Compare And Contrast Terms Flashcards
Latitude and longitude
Similar: both are imaginary lines placed by the government to separate the world into areas.
Different: latitude lines run east to west and longitude lines run north to south.
Hydro electricity and thermal electricity
Similar: both are ways of producing electrical energy
Different: hydro electricity is produced using the force of running water, thermal electricity is produced from heat and burning things.
Climate and weather
Similar: show the conditions of the atmosphere
Different: climate shows the average, long term conditions and weather is the short term day to day conditions.
Rural and urban
Similar: both describe an area in which people live and how much population is there.
Different: rural areas are less populated and land plots are bigger. Urban areas have many people living on smaller plots of land.
Weathering and erosion
Similar: change the landscape over time
Different: the weathering process tends to wear down or change the landscape slowly by actions of wind and water. Erosion is the faster movement of land after its been broken.
Inshore and offshore fishing
Similar: both are ways of fishing
Different: inshore fishing is within 10 km of the shore, offshore fishing is in deep waters further from the shore.
Air mass and jet streams
Similar: refer to the movement of air in the atmosphere
Different: air masses are large bodies of air in the lower atmosphere that moves as one large mass and has similar characteristics, jet streams refer to very strong winds concentrated in a narrow stream in the upper atmosphere.
International date line and the prime meridian
Similar: imaginary lines of longitude at divide he earth
Different: international date line is at 180° longitude where one day begins and another ends. The prime meridian is at 0° longitude and marks where all other longitude line are measured away from.
Leeward and windward
Similar: where something is situated in relation to the wind.
Different: leeward is the opposite direction which the wind blows, windward is the direction in which wind blows.
Labor intensive and subsistence farming
Similar: forms of work for some kind of reward.
Different: labor intensive is an industry needing lots of workers and each gets paid for their work. Subsistence is farming done by only the family and no profits are made. The purpose is for survival.
Maritime climate and continental climate
Similar: long term conditions of the atmosphere
Different: maritime climate is influenced by the conditions of the sea. It is usually more humid and moist. Continental climate is influenced by the land. Generally they have extremes in temperature and low precipitation.
Lava and magma
Similar: molten rock in volcanoes
Different: lava is molten magma at earths surface, magma is molten rock beneath the solid crust of the earth.
Agrarian and aquaculture
Similar: forms of growing food
Different: agrarian is growing food on land, aquaculture is growing food in water.
Choice cutting and patch cutting
Similar: both are ways of deforestation
Different: choice cutting is removing one type of tree, patch cutting is removing all trees in an area.
Lithosphere and mantle
Similar: contain rocks to make up a layer of the earth
Different: lithosphere is solid rock and the mantle is semi rock. The mantle is below the lithosphere.
Boreal and tropical forests
Similar: both are dense forests
Different: boreal forests are in cooler climates and tropical forests are in hot climates.
Igneous and sedimentary
Similar: types of rocks
Different: igneous is formed through the cooling of magma and sedimentary rocks are formed by layers of sediment.
Shield volcanoes and composite volcanoes
Similar: types of volcanoes
Different: shield volcanoes tend to rise from the ocean floor and be quite large. Composite volcanoes tend to rise from the continents, be made of combination of ashes, large rocks and lava. (More violent explosions)
Oil fields and oil sands
Similar: areas one can find oil
Different: oil fields are often found between sedimentary layers of the earth and require long pipes to be drilled down to the oil. Oil sands are basically oil soaked surface sands that require quite a bit of super heated and steamed water to separate and remove the oil from the sand.
Conservation and consumer society
Similar: both ways to use a resource
Different: conservation is using resources widely and saving some for later. Consumer society is using resources as much as wanted without considering the future.
Coniferous and deciduous trees
Similar: both types of trees
Different: coniferous have needles, are cone shaped and stay green through winter. Deciduous trees have leaves that fall in autumn.
Elevation and relief
Similar: relating to earths elevation
Different: elevation is the height above sea level and relief is the highest and lowest points in an area. Ex. Mountain
Drought and desert
Similar: both relate to having low precipitation and dryer weather in an area.
Different: deserts are areas that have dry climate, droughts are a period of time where an area experiences dry temperatures and low precipitation.
Fossil fuels and geothermal energy
Similar: produce best for warming buildings
Different: fossil fuels are dead plant and animal remains burned to create energy. Geothermal energy is from the best of the earth captured and transferred.
Delta and glacial till
Similar: sediment types that are moved and deposited by water.
Different: deltas refer to sands gathered at the end of a river from the weathered areas along the rivers path. Glacial tills are deposited broken down material left behind by the runoff from the receding glaciers.
Hot desert and cold desert
Similar: both are land that has less biodiversity due to dryer conditions.
Different: not deserts are at low altitudes and have extreme heat. Cold deserts have a higher altitude and experience colder climates.
