COMP1 - Sound Flashcards
Analogue Data
Data that varies in a continuous manner - as a wave.
Digital Data
Data that takes form of discrete values - either on or off.
Nyquist’s Theorem
Sample at a frequency at least twice the rate of the highest frequency in the sampled signal.
Sampling Resolution
Number of bits used to code each sample.
Sampling Rate
Samples per second (Hz).
Pulse Code Manipulation
Used to digitally represent sampled analogue signals.
Quantization
Difference between original amplitude and its sampled value.
MIDI
Music Instrument Digital Interface - used for controlling devices and represents sounds made by an instrument.
Synthesised Sound
Uses digital means to generate audio signals resembling instrument sounds.
Essential Software in the Main Memory for recoding
1) Sound Recorder
2) Operating System
