When does preoperative care begin and end?
Begins when the client is scheduled for surgery.
Ends when the client is in surgery.
Nurses role (3 things)
Verify that consent has been signed
Dispel any myths or anxiety
Clarify facts from the surgeon.
What is Malignant Hyperthermia?
It is a post of complication. Muscle disorder that is due to reaction to drugs.
What are 6 Symptoms of malignant hyperthermia?
Tachycardia
Extreme temperature
Hypotension
Cyanosis
Dysrhythmia
Electrolyte imbalance.
Antidote for malignant hyperthermia
Dantrolene sodium
Post op phase 1?
Monitor airway, vitals and recovery
Goal of phase 1
To Regain alertness after surgery and hemodynamics stability.
Phase 2
Prepares client for extended care ex: gets sent to medsurge unit, or home. Lasts 1-2 hrs
Phase 2 goal
Patient education, making sure that LOC has returned, and vitals are stable.
Phase 3
You’re in the extended car environment. Occurs If you have continuing needs, or you might’ve at home.
Vitals are monitored once daily now.
Phase 3 goals (5 things)
- Meet discharge needs.
- Vitals are stable, no sickness or unmanageable pain.
- Monitor motor function after anesthesia.
- Check I&O (hydration status)
- Do full assessment before patient can leave.
Interventions for post op
PCA pump
Opioid
NSAID’s
Comfort positioning
Patient education
Labs for post op
- CBC
- Shift to left (indicates infec)
- Bun and creative
4 Electrolytes.
