Commutators Flashcards
Define the commutator of  and B̂
[Â, B̂] = ÂB̂ - B̂Â
aka difference between measuring B then A, and A then B
If  and B̂ commute?
[Â, B̂] = 0
ÂB̂Ψ = B̂ÂΨ for any Ψ
and B̂ can be measured in either order and give the same answer.
and B̂ share eigenfunctions and are therefore compatible.
If  and B̂ dont commute?
[Â, B̂] ≠ 0
The order of measurement matters.
Both cannot be known simultaneously.
and B̂ do not share eigenfunctions and are therefore not compatible.
Important result: [x̂, p̂ₓ]
(also practice proving)
[x̂, p̂ₓ] = x̂p̂ₓ - p̂ₓx̂
= iħ
[p̂ₓ²,x̂]
-2iħp̂ₓ
[x̂², p̂ₓ]
2iħx̂
[Ĥ, â†]
Use [p̂ₓ²,x̂] = -2iħp̂ₓ and [x̂², p̂ₓ] = 2iħx̂
[Ĥ, â†] = -ħωâ†
[Ĥ, â]
Use [p̂ₓ²,x̂] = -2iħp̂ₓ and [x̂², p̂ₓ] = 2iħx̂
[Ĥ, â] = -ħωâ
