Catholic attitudes to women?
Men and women equal roles and rights in society. Not in church leadership- Jesus personally nominated Peter to lead church= only men priests.
Men and women made on same day (Genesis)= God’s image= equal
Jesus’ followers (apostles) were all men, priests follow on from them.
Traditional protestant attitudes to women?
Evangelicals see men and women having different roles- can’t be equal in religion. Women- bring up children- Men provide. Men church leaders.
St Paul teaches women not speak/ teach in church.

Men and women fully equal- have women priests.
Jesus treated women as his equal- Samaritan woman in John.4.

Different roles= different rights.
Quran states men must support women as stronger.
Quran states women designed to give birth.
Only men become Imams (traditionally).
Women inherit 1/2 men do, pressure on men to provide.
Modern Muslim attitudes to women?
Men and women completely equal in religion and education.
Quran teaches both equal.
Muhammad allows women into mosque to worship.
Early Islam had women religious leaders.
Women want rights that women have earned in other parts of world.
Benefits of multi-ethnic society?(racial harmony)
Uk has wide variety of- music, culture, food and clothes.
More peaceful world- people of different races/nationalities learn to live and work alongside each other.
Good for religions see different ethnic groups following their religion.
Problems of discrimination and racism?
Prejudiced employers not give jobs to certain religious groups.
Prejudiced teachers may get ethnic children expelled, put in lower sets.
Prejudiced police- stop blacks more often/ not treat them seriously.
Effects of discrimination and racism?
Treated unfairly= work against society.
People feel won’t get good job due to prejudice= turn to crime/ terrorism.
Lead to extremist groups e.g. the BNP.
Why is community cohesion important?
Without it, different groups have own agendas- leads to violence.
E.g. Bradford riots.
Why Christians promote racial harmony?
Bible opens- God creating everyone in his own image= prejudice and discrimination wrong.
Good Samaritan- Jesus tells- help whoever in need regardless of race/ religion.
Christian leaders of every colour/ race- silly to be racist.
St Paul said= everyone equal in eyes of God.
Why Muslims promote racial harmony?
Muhammad’s first prayer caller= black African.
All humans made by God.
Muhammad said- all Muslims brothers with each other.
Islam= worldwide religion made up of all races.
Benefits of multi- faith society?
Learn what other religions about- from friends/ neighbours.
Seeing others committed to religion- makes others think about own faith.
People= more understanding.
More religious tolerance= limit conflict.
Issues for religion in multi- faith society?
Conversion- teachings of religions conflict- some see duty to convert others= problems as could be seen as prejudice= leads to arguments, violence.
Bringing up children- In UK children in contact with lots or religions- may go against parents- causes friction. Some religious parents say children must keep in faith in order to see them when they die.
Inter-faith marriages- causes problems, where will marry, which religion children grow up in, if not work= hatred and violence.
How religions promote community cohesion in UK?
Work together to see what they have in common. E.g. Christianity, Islam, Judaism believe in Moses and Abraham.
Develop inter-faith marriage services.
Muslim council in UK encourages Muslims to be actively involved in communities.
Join to explore ways of helping community cohesion e.g. inter faith network- promotes good relations between religions.
How Vicar of Dibley fair to religious people?
Vicar very normal with good sense of humour- positive light for Christians.
Balances ‘for’ and ‘against’ arguments for women vicars in a fair way. Clear attempt not to upset Christians.
