Community-based Participatory Research & Intervention Research Flashcards
What is Community Based Research?
Scientific inquiry involving humans that take places in the community
“Fourth estate” (in addition to basic, clinical, health service)
-also this approach and not a research method of design
–can be community intervention trial or, cross section study
What are the elements of Community Based Research?
- focus on prevention
- population-centered
- multidisciplinary approach (Bio behavioral/medical/social)
- participants continue usual activities
- motivation usually low (high attrition rate)
How is the Community Based Research (CBR) conducted?
CBR conducted with a community in a partnership arrangement
CBPR is a collaborative research approach that is designed to ensure and establish structures for participation by communities affected by the issue being studied, representatives of organizations, and researchers in all aspects of the research process to improve health and well-being through taking action, including social change” (AHRQ)
How does CBR involve community participation in the phase of the study?
- identifying the problem
- defining the research question
- developing protocol
- analyzing data
- disseminating results
What are the principles of CBPR?
- recognizing community as a unit of identity (ex: geography, ethnicity or occupation)
- builds on strengths and resources within the community (vs needs and problem)
- facilitates collaborative partnerships in all phases of research
- integrates knowledge and action for mutual benefit of all partners
- -add to broad knowledge base
- -integrated to local efforts for community change
-addresses health both from positive and ecological perspectives
+positive: physical, mental, and social well being
+ecologic: economic, cultural, historical, and political,
- disseminates findings and knowledge to all partners
- involves long term commitment by all partners
-promotes co-learning and empowering process that attends to social inequality
+sharing information
+decision making power
+resources and support
-involves a cyclical iterative process \+partnership development \+community assessment \+problem definition, research design/conflict \+dissemination \+determination of action/Implications \+back to community assessment
