within oneself EX: athletes thoughts before a race, meditation, prayer, journal,»_space; the base of ALL communication
Interpersonal
between 2 or more people
Group
3 to 10 people; one message to multiple people, bouncing ideas off of each other.
Public
Local politician giving a speech at a park. Class meetings
Mass
Same message viewed/listened to at different times. Feedback is delayed. Social Media, tv, radio
Sender
the individual who initiates a message.
Also called the communicator or source.
Receiver
the listener, reader, or observer–that is, the individual(s) to whom a message is directed.
Encoding
Transforms an abstract idea into a communicable message.
This is done using words, symbols, pictures, and sounds.
Decoding
interprets the message and comes to an understanding about what the source is communicating.
Feedback
the response given by the receiver to the source.
Channel
A system or method that is used for communicating with other people.
EX: radio, email, skype…
Ethics
Pertaining to right and wrong in conduct
Internal Barrier
Noise within a person’s mind that distracts them from sending/receiving messages
EX: Attitude, motivation, interest, educational, background, preferences, bias
External Barrier
Noise in the environment to which distracts the sender/receiver or becomes a barrier to communication.
EX: Environment, noise, appearance
Attitudinal Barrier
You don’t like the content of the message
Social Barrier
You don’t get along with the other individual or don’t really know them
Environmental Barrier
There is something in the physical environment that is hindering communication (this is the only barrier that is external)
Cultural Barrier
You come from different backgrounds (which can impact perspective, experiences, norms, and language)
Educational Barrier
You have different levels of education which can impact frame of reference, technical jargon, etc.
