Therapeutic communication
A face to face interaction that focuses on the emotional and well being of the patient
Passive communication
Tends to put other peoples needs ahead of their own
Assertive communication
The ability to confidently and comfortably express thoughts and feelings while still respecting the other persons rights.
Aggressive communication
No respect, blames others for their problems, uses guilt.
Barriers to communication
Age, physical issues, gender, language or cultural differences
Cognitive impairments
Giving eye contact before talking to the patient, allowing time for the patient to proccess everything being communicated.
Hearing impaired patient
Use patients name, be sure to have their attention before talking, face the patient.
Communication advantages
Wins friends, successful relationships, improves business profits

Verbal strategies
Ask questions, repeat back, ask for clarifications, affirm, self correct
What is active listening?
Being able to ensure the listener is interpreting what the speaker is saying.
Examples of active listening?
Nodding your head, smiling, looking at facial expressions.
Pros of being assertive.
Builds respect and self confidence. Mutual respect and trust between people.
Cons of being passive
Gets you off the hook but it lowers self esteem and invites others to take advantage of you.
Cons of being aggressive
May get us what we want but it will destroy mutual respect and trust.
What is Compromise?
Making a concession or giving up something in order to reach a happy medium.
What is collaboration in communication?
It is the proccess of which every individual matters and is equally treated and heard.
What is Reflective communication?
To allow the speaker to hear their own thoughts and to focus on what they have to say and feel. To encourage them to continue talking.
What is team cohesion?
Team cohesion is when a group of individuals in an organization share a strong sense of common identity.
What is a Thixotropic gel?
It is a non reacting synthetic substance contained near the bottom of the tube.
