How would you prepare for a negotiation?
- Assess the details of the negotiation and collate evidence or backup
- Understand who I am negotiating with
- What they want to achieve
- Where I can compromise

Can you provide an example of when you have communicated effectively?
Coordinating inspections for Target REIT.
I compiled a schedule of inspections, mapping out the properties in the portfolio, grouping properties within clusters which could be inspected in a single day. I liaised with the healthcare director at the REIT who in turn spoke to the individual properties to confirm whether they could factilitate inspections on that day.
What is communication?
The exchange on information.
What are the different types of communication?
Verbal and non-verbal.
Formal and informal.
Written and visual.
What is a negotiation?
A discussion with the purpose of reaching a compromise or agreement.
What are the stages of a negotiation?
- Preparation
- Opening (information exchange)
- Bargaining
- Conclusion
What is required for a good presentation?
- Clear and concise
- Confidence
- Visual aids to get your point across
- Positive body language
What is your negotiating style?
Dependant on situation:
- Fair and understanding of other party
- Assertive in making my own points
What are the barriers to communication?
- Time zones
- Language
- Use of jargon
- Hearing and speech difficulties
How would you chair an effective meeting?
- Prepare for the meeting with key documents and visuals
- Ensure the relevant people are invited
- Have an agenda, issue beforehand and ensure it is followed
- Allow everyone the opportunity to contribute
- Use of and reading body language
- Record minutes of key points and actions for individuals to take away
