What is Intrapersonal Communication?
Communication with yourself, the “little voice in your head.” Not directly meant for others, although it may affect your interactions.
Think of Jimmy cricket, Pinocchio’s conscious
“This is your conscience speaking”
What is communication?
An imparting or exchange of information between people or places
PROCESS, HUMAN, SHARED, and SYMBOLIC
What is Interpersonal Communication?
2 person communication either in person or through mediated channels. Often called “dyadic communication”
Small Group Communication
Communication where each person can actively participate, usually with a leader who strongly influences the group. Majorities may influence conformity, but also may encourage more risk taking.
Public Communication
Communication where the group is too large for all members to participate. One or two people do the majority of the speaking and the rest become the audience. Limited chances for verbal feedback.
Mass Communication
Messages transmitted to mass audiences through electronic and print media. No personal contact between senders and receivers. May be influenced by the views of the sender or the Sponsor.
Functions of Communication
Communication satisfies Physical, Social, Identity, and Practical needs
The Linear Model of Communication
Model where a sender encodes ideas or feelings into some kind of message and conveys it to a receiver, who decodes them.
Factors affecting Communication
External Noise: literal disruptive sound
Physiological Noise: the physical state of the sender/receiver
Psychological Noise: mental forces that interfere with expression or understanding
Environment: physical location, past experiences, cultural backgrounds
Transactional Model of Communication
The sender and receiver simultaneously send and receive messages with verbal and nonverbal feedback. More accurate than the linear model.
Mediated Communication
Communication carried out with the use of information communication technology like writing, phones, texts, emails, etc. The opposite of face to face interaction.
Communication Competence
There is no ideal way to communicate, competence is situational, competence is relational, and competence can be learned.
Characteristics of Competent Communicators
The ability to choose the most appropriate behavior, skill at performing behaviors, being empathetic, able to see multiple perspectives, self-monitoring, and commitment to the relationship.
Kenneth Burke’s Definition of Humans
Humans are symbol users and misusers, inventors of the negative, driven by a sense of hierarchy, separated from the natural condition by instruments of his own creation, and rotten with perfection.
