Communication basics Flashcards
Serial Data Transmission
Bits are sent one at a time over a single data line from source to destination
Parallel data transmission
Bits are sent simultaneously over separate data lines from source to destination
Bit rate
speed that data is sent measured in bits per seconds
Baud rate
number of symbol or waveform changes per second
Bandwidth
Range of of frequencies that a transmission can carry
Latency
the time delay between the first byte being sent and it being received
Synchronous transmission
transmits data at regular intervals timed by a shared clock signal
Asynchronous transmission
Sends each byte one at a time with each character preceded by a start bit
Protocol
Common set of rules that dictate how devices on a network communicate
