Q

Describe ways in which you can identify if a website is reliable

A

Non biased - using a range of websites will help achieve a balanced view before making any decisions. Many organisations use their website as a marketing tool and will only post positive information - users should use a number of reliable websites to ensure they get a balanced view.

Complete/sufficient - broad and thorough, which gives the whole picture. Using a range of websites should ensure a user has enough information to make an informed decision.

Accurate - users should always check information contained in a website is correct. It must be precise and truthful.

Regularly updated website - users should try to use websites that are updated on a regular basis - check the properties of website for this information or look to see if some obvious up-to-date information is included on the website, such as ‘today’s special offers’. These websites are likely to be accurate.

Good reputation of author - users relying on the internet for accurate information should only use websites that are reputable or from a well-known organisation, such as government websites.

Reliable - users of the internet must be selective about the sources of information they use. Anyone can create a website and post information, which may be inaccurate and therefore unreliable.
Users should look carefully at the website - if the site looks poorly designed and substandard it has probably been created by an amateur and it is likely to be unreliable.
