What happens if you use the wrong method of communication?
- Misunderstanding / confusion

What must you consider when selecting a communication method?
- Who the target audience are – technical or layman terms?
- Time – is it urgent
- Format - Does it need a written record / paper trail? Complaint or formal minutes
- Message – active or passive
What are the barriers of effective communication?
- Verbal - tone of voice, clarity, language barriers, what we don’t say (silence!)
- Jargon/technical language - who is your audience, will they understand technical terms or do you need to use simple and use non-technical/lay language?
- Emotional/cultural barriers
- Recipient is disinterested or not paying attention
- Timing of the communication
- Physical barriers, e.g. arms folded, hand over mouth
- Differences in perception/viewpoint
- Prejudice/bias
- Differing expectations
- Interruptions - noise, physical distractions
- Location - can’t physically meet in person

• Good communication can avoid conflict by:
o Reducing the likelihood or error, misunderstanding or misinterpretation
o Communicating key objectives and deliverables
o Encouraging collaboration, building working relationships
