Communication and Navigation Systems Flashcards
What are the basic auto pilot components?
- Sensing elements (gyros)
- output elements (servos)
- command elements (flight controller)
- computing elements (computer and amplifier)
What are the sensing elements of an auto pilot system?
Attitude, directional and turning gyros in an altitude sensor office
What are the actuating elements (output) of an auto pilot system?
Servos that operate the control surfaces
What is the function of the servos in an auto pilot system?
The servers actuate the flight controls
What is the most common communication system use?
VHF Band - 118.0 to 136.975 MHz.
What is VOR equipment used for?
Navigation
What are the components of a typical VOR system?
A receiver, visual indicator, frequency selector, antennas, and power supply
What is an ADF?
Automatic Direction Finding
Why are two antennas on a single multiple element antenna usually required for an ILS system?
One for the localizer and the other for the glideslope receivers
What information does a glideslope radio beam provide?
Vertical guidance for correct angle of descent
What is a DME?
Distance Measuring Equipment
Where should DME antennas be located?
Generally, on the bottom of the aircraft, fuselage and location is not blocked by the wing
What powers in emergency locator transmitter (ELT)?
On internal battery
What is one method used to monitor the output signal during an ELT test?
A VHF communications receiver tuned to 121.5 MHz.
What time of day should you perform the maintenance test of an installed ELT?
During the first five minutes after the hour for no more than three sweeps any other time should be coordinated with the nearest control tower or flight service station
