open ended questions
those which cannot be answered with a yes or no or one word answer. Use to begin each line of inquiry
why open ended questions
encourage the patients story, actually save time, good for eliciting psychosocial aspects, allow the patient to choose the most important symptoms
close ended questions
those that can be answered by yes or no or a few words. Those for which the desired answer is clear. Used as follow up questions. Provide detail. Clarify meaning.
active listening
communication that is non-evaluative, attentive and encouraging

communication that reflects caring
