Communication Flashcards
Explain Conduction using the particle theory
Heat energy causes particles in substances to have greater kinetic energy and vibrate rapidly
Conduction occurs when vibrations moves from particle to particle when they bump into each other
Explain Convection using the particle theory
When fluid is heated, the fluid becomes less dense and floats to the top. The colder fluid is more dense it takes it place underneath and the process is repeated.
Heat transfer using radiation
All objects radiate their heat to surroundings through electromagnetic waves in the infra-red range. These waves are easily absorbed by matter and becomes heat energy
Why can’t infra-red radiation be seen?
Because the wavelengths are too long. But as the temperature increases, the wavelengths become shorter and we can eventually see emitted waves.
Describe the Characteristics of Compression Waves (Longitudinal)
Particle motion is PARALLEL to the direction of the wave
- The medium oscillates parallel to the direction of the wave.
Can be transmitted through solids, liquids and Gasses
Think of it like a spring
Transverse Wave
Particle motion is perpendicular to the direction of travel of the wave
Can travel through solids or the surface of liquids.
Medium oscillates up and down the equilibrium
State the wave equation
v = f x λ
