Structuring a consultation: Aims, key points, ideas, concerns, expectations
Aims: get to the bottom of the issue using structure and medical knowledge. Holistic and non-medical issues check which will test soft skills, empathy and communication is tested.
Key points: Pathology, presenting complaint, signposting, open questions, different line of questioning and techniques to have a holistic approach.
Ideas : what does the patient think is causing their illness
Concerns: their worries?
Expectations: what do they want to leave the GP surgery with?
Key thought: how easy will it be follow up, or engage regularly with them?
Mirror their emotions, recap answers to ensure you have all the details.
Vaccine consenting: informed consent, importance in modern landscape, pushback question to antivaxxers.
Informed consent: patient is happy for procedure to go ahead whilst understanding the situation, procedure and the impact of their decision.
Importance: COVID, Herd immunity, anti-vaxxers, clear side effects of vaccines increasing reluctance.
Pushback question: question their capacity ‘out to get them’, question and explain contents of a vaccine and how it works, gain informed consent. Explain herd immunity and effects of disease. Ask patient to weigh and explain it back to you so they can make their decision.
