What is communication?
-The act of imparting news of information or means of connecting places. It is a science and practise of transmitting information
What are communication skills?
-The ability to communicate clearly and
effectively with patients, family members ,
pharmacy colleagues and other health care
professionals.
What is poor communication?
-Inaccurate patient medication history
-Patient confusion, patient disinterest and patient non-compliance
What is verbal communication?
-Oral communication
What is non-verbal communication?
-gestures
-body language
-facial expressions
-physical touch
-eye contact
-Body posture
-Proximity/positioning
-Appearance
-Paralinguistic cues
-Visual aid
What are the Barriers to
effective non verbal
communication?
-Not being able to see the body language, gestures etc.
-visual aid for example, may discourage
patients from asking the questions
Examples of good communication skills?
-Active listening
-Observation and assessment
-Eye contact
What are the barriers to effective
verbal communication?
-Keeping eye contact, nodding,
asking questions
-Irregular speech, lots pauses ,
huge detail, no eye contact, exec
fidgeting
-Low level of energy, flat effect,
monotone voice, uninterested
What is the difference between open and closed questions?
-Closed questions can cause the patient to become more passive
-Open questions permit open expression and develop a trusting relationship
