Communicable Diseases Flashcards
salmonella
- fever, stomach cramps, vomiting & diarrhoea
-eating contaminated food
-bacteria
gonorrhoea
-pain when urinating, yellow/green discharge from genitals
-std (sexual contact)
-bacteria
measles
-red rash, fever can lead to pneumonia or encephalitis
-droplets from an infected sneeze or cough
-virus
HIV
-flu like, attacks immune cells
-sexual contact or sharing bodily fluids (eg needles)
-virus
tobacco mosaic virus
-a mosaic pattern on leaves and discolouration, leads to less photosynthesis
-plant contact
-virus
rose black spot
- black or purple spots meaning photosynthesis cant be carried out
-water or by wind
-fungi
malaria
-repeating episodes or fever, can be fatal
-vectors (mosquitoes)
-protist
phagocytosis
-wbc engulfs pathogen
-enzymes destroy pathogen
-wbc does this multiple times until it dies, dead cells form puss around injury
antibody production
-antibodies have specific shapes that allow them to latch on to the antigen
-this prevents movement and marks it for phagocytosis
- antibodies are specific to a particular pathogen and can be rapidly made again
-LYMPHOCYTES
antitoxin production
-bind to toxins made by bacteria and prevent them from harming your cells
-some lymphocytes will then stay primed as memory cells
-can respond quickly and make more if the same pathogen is there
