Family

Community
In this extract and throughout the play, Lamont Stewart explores the theme of community through relationships and interactions between the neighbours. Community can be a coping mechanism and source of support through struggles with poverty, but it also comes with conflicts and a lack of privacy.
Poverty
In this extract and throughout the play, Lamont Stewart explores the theme of poverty through showing how different characters are impacted by poverty and how they react to it. For example, John is disheartened by his poverty and blames it on the depression whereas Maggie accepts her poverty and seeks help from family and the Mission. (Alec turns to crime and Jenny takes initiative)
Role of Women
In this extract and throughout the play, Lamont Stewart explores the role of women through showing the different roles of female throughout the play and how they respond to the tradicional role of women. Women are shown to be much more practical and productive than the men in the play, yet they suffer the most due to the lack of support from the men.
Gender Stereotypes
In this extract and throughout the play, Lamont Stewart explores the theme of gender stereotypes through presenting the role of men to be the providers and protectors, and exploring the effect this role has on them. Women are shown to bear the biggest burden throughout the play, much to their own expense.
Love
In this extract and throughout the play, Lamont Stewart the theme of love by presenting the different types of love and relationships within the play, such as sororal or romantic love. We are shown the supportive, affirmative, forgiving nature of love, but also the negative aspects of love such as destruction, conflict and manipulation.
Conflict
In this extract and throughout the play, Lamont Stewart the theme of conflict by showing both the internal and external factors that can cause conflict, and how different characters react to this. For example, stress, relationships, dissatisfaction and poverty are all sources of conflict and can manifest themselves in different ways such as violence.
Male Violence
In this extract and throughout the play, Lamont Stewart the theme of male violence by showing the showing the factors that cause male violence, such as alcohol, stress and poverty, and how different characters respond to the topic of male violence. The neighbours try to support Mrs Bone, while Mrs Bone likes to keep quiet about her abuse.
