Common tests/procedures Flashcards
Artificial heart valves
A device implanted in the heart of a patient with valvular heart disease.
Bypass graft (Vein, Mammary Artery, Aorta-Coronary Bypass Graft)
A surgical procedure where a piece of vein, taken from the leg, or a piece or artery, taken from the inside of the chest wall, replaces a diseased coronary artery. The graft helps get more blood to the heart muscle.
Cardiac angiogram or Catheterization
An X-ray procedure which involves the injection of dye into the heart chambers and into the coronary arteries for diagnostic purposes. An X-ray reveals the exact site where the artery is narrowed or blocked and measures how well the heart is pumping.
Computed Tomography Scan (CT)
A series of X-ray images taken from different angles and uses computer processing to create cross-sectional images, or slices, of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside your body.
Coronary artery stenting
A tube-shaped device is placed in the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart, to keep the arteries open in the treatment of coronary heart disease.
coronary artery stenting is used in
percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
echocardiography
ultrasound of the heart
electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG)
A recording of the electrical activity of the heart. The EKG recording can be used to detect many abnormalities in the heart.
Exercise Testing
A noninvasive procedure that provides diagnostic and prognostic information and evaluates an individual’s capacity for dynamic exercise
MRI
A technique that uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the organs and tissues within your body.
Nuclear stress testing
A nuclear imaging test that shows how well blood flows into the heart while you’re exercising or at rest.
Pacemaker
Electronic device used to control the heart rate. Used after open heart surgery to maintain a steady heart rate for recovery, and, in emergencies, to stimulate the heart to beat
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement
A minimally invasive procedure to replace a narrowed aortic valve that fails to open properly (aortic valve stenosis).
