Anatomy Flashcards
Aorta
Main artery leaving the heart
Arteries
Vessels that transport oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
Coronary arteries
Special arteries which supply the heart muscle with blood.
Left Main coronary artery
Divides into two branches: the circumflex artery and the left anterior descending artery.
Circumflex artery
Supplies blood to the left atrium and the side and back of the left ventricle.
Left anterior descending artery (LAD)
Supplies blood to the front and bottom of the left ventricle and the front of the septum.
Right Coronary Artery
Supplies blood to the right atrium, right ventricle, bottom portion of the left ventricle, and the back of the septum.
Pulmonary artery
Carries blood from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs for oxygenation.
Veins
Vessels that transport blood back to the heart after the oxygen has been used by the body.
Coronary veins
Take oxygen-poor blood that has already been “used” by muscles of the heart and return it to the right atrium.
Pulmonary veins
Carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart.
Valves
1-way opening that prevent back flow of blood
Aortic valve
The valve that sits at the junction of the left ventricle and the aorta. When the valve is open it allows blood to flow from the left ventricle to the aorta, and when closed, prevents any backward flow.
Mitral valve
The valve that sits between the left atrium and the left ventricle.
Pulmonary valve
The valve that sits at the junction of the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery.
Tricuspid valve
The valve that sits between the right atrium and the right ventricle.
Pericardium
Fluid filled cavity that surrounds the heart, to hold it in place and provide a barrier to other organs.
4 chambers of the heart
- R ventricle
- L ventricle
- R atrium
- L atrium
