17
Q

If a dog has a history of traveling to Arizona and comes to your clinic coughing, what is the main differential on your list related to fungal infections?

A

Coccidomycosis

18
Q

What is valley fever

A

coccidiomycosis

19
Q

What are the most comon areas to find Sporotrichosis lesions in the dog, humans and cats

A

Dog- cutaneous
Humans- lymphocutaneous
Cats- disseminated

20
Q

What organism is responsible for Sporotrichosis?

A

sporothrix schenckii (direct innoculation)

21
Q

What fungal mycosis is a concern for zoonosis?

A

Sporotrichosis
this is a concern because no injury may have occurred. This can be transmitted by coming into contact with exudate, wounds or trauma.

22
Q

How do you diagnose Sporotrichosis?

A

These will be found on cytology within macrophages.

23
Q

how do you treat a dog with sporotrichosis?

A

potassium iodide or itraconazol

24
Q

How do you trat a cat with sporotrichosis?

A

Itraconazole

25
Q

What organism causes pythiosis?

A

Pythium insidiosum

oomycete -> zoospore -> form germ tubes that facilitate tissue invasion by hyphal elements.

26
Q

How are oomycetes different than true fungi?

A

Cell wall composition is primarily made of cellulose and B-glucan. they lack chitin and ergosterol

27
Q

What forms of disease can you get of Pythiosis?

A

cutaneous and GI- cutaneous is most common.

solitary ulcerative nodules with draining tract.

28
Q

How do you diagnose pythiosis?

A

histopathology- presence of hyphal ghosts

Cytology will show pyogranulomatous inflammation with a lot of eosinophils, but histopathology is best

29
Q

How do you treat pythiosis?

A

Wide surgical excision or amputation.

This should be combined with antifungal therapy such as Echinocadins or Itraconazole + terbinafine
