Common Nervous System Disorders Flashcards
what are the 3 common nersous system disorders
- Parkinsons disease
- Alzheimers & dementia
- Concussion
what is Parkinsons Disease
progressive; involving deterioration of the brain, particularly in the substancia nigra
substancia nigra: control of movement, releases dopamine
cause of parkinsons + how does it build up
cause: unknown, genetic
- misfolding of protein a-synuclein causes it to build up and damage nervous tissue
- lack of dopamine means movements are not properly controlled
symptoms of parkinsons (4)
- tremors
- slow movement
- uneven gait
- muscle stiffness
treatment of parkinsons + life expectancy
treatment: a medication increasing levels of dopamine in the brain
- deep brain stimulation to activate neurons affected by loss of SN
no cure atm
life expectancy: normal
what are alzheimers & dementia
dementia: overall decline of mental ability, often late in life, that impacts a persons daily life and regular functions
alzheimers: specific disease that is also a common cause of dementia
symptoms of alzheimers & dementia
(early) memory loss, cognitive decline
(late) wandering, difficulty making decision and planning
cause + cure of alzheimers & dementia
cause: unknown- genetic link
cure: no cure, although certain medications can slow it down for a bit
concussion causes (mild traumatic brain injury)
- an impact to the head, which makes the brainmatter shift back and forth inside the skull causing injury to the cells (not structure)
- this stretches the neurons and can even cause them to break
symptomes of concussion (5)
- headaches
- nausea
- vomiting
- sensitivity to light/sound
- confusion
treatment for concussion
time
limit lights / screens / heavy mental work
