no technical meaning, used to transform a statement into a question. similar to ‘do’ in english but the word order stays the same
eg. tu es pret - you are ready
est-ce-que tu es pret? - are you ready?
elle est heureuse - she is happy
est-ce qu’elle est heureuse? - is she happy?

qu’est-ce que
usually used to mean ‘what do’. just est-ce que with quoi/ what added to the start
**eg. ** Qu’est-ce que tu manges le soir?
What do you eat in the evening?
Qu’est-ce que tu fais ce soir ?
What are you doing this evening?

(tu aimes manger becomes aimes-tu manger?)
the more formal way to ask a question in french
in the example, you like to eat becomes do you like to eat? through inverting the conjugated verb and the subject pronoun.
