What was the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP)?
The Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is a set of rules and regulations established by the European Union to manage the fishing industry across member states. The policy aims to ensure sustainable fishing practices and to promote cooperation between EU countries in managing fish stocks.
Why was the CFP a major of contention during the Brexit negotiation?
During the Brexit negotiations, fisheries became one of the most contentious issues (Factortame, 1991). The EU initially wanted continued access to UK waters for its fishing fleets, while the UK government insisted on regaining control of its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and determining who could fish there.
