How to deal with an animal in shock
- keep them warm as it is a lack of blood getting to major organs or the brain
- keep airways clear
- stop animal from moving
- keep the head lower than the body
Symptoms- white gums, cold to touch, slow capillary refill time
Road traffic collision
RIng a vet immediately
- Be calm, gentle
- Check airways, breathing and circulation
- try stop the blood if the animal is bleeding
- cover any wounds
Convulsions
seizures known as
- keep noise to a minimum
- try not to touch the animal
- do not try to give it water or food
- Call vet
Fractures
- keep animal calm
- ## try stop animal from moving
Wounds
- cover wounds until seen properly
Dislocations
try to keep animal as still as possible
- get to a vet quickly
Chocking
restrain the animal and check airways and any obvious blockages
If not pull back from the ribs
Poisoning
Symptoms:
- stomach pains
- unsteady on feet
- vomiting
- slow capillary refill time
What to do
- do not induce vomiting
- keep the animal warm and comfortable
Burns and scalds
Restrain the animal
- cool the area with soaked cloth
- do not break blisters or apply creams
Bites and stings
- if sting is still in there remove it
- apply ice or cold compress to the sting
Haemorrhages
Symptoms:
- pale gums
- rapid pulse
slow capillary refill time
- coughing up blood
What to do:
- place an absorbant dressing on the affected area
- Make sure there are no foregin objects in the wound
