Different types of puns?
-Homophones - same pronunciation - different meaning.
-Homonyms - same pronunciation and spelling - different meanings.
Features of repartee?
-Quick bantering conversation.
-Techniques of word play, punning, sarcastic put-downs or clever responses.
E.g. Kate and Petruchio in meeting seen
‘I am mooved to woo thee’
‘Let him that moved you hither/Remove you hence.’
‘Why, what’s a movable’
‘A joint stool’
‘Come sit on me’
‘Assess are made to bear, and so are you’
‘Women are made to bear, and so are you’.
What is a malapropism?
-misuse of a similar sounding word.
What is incongruous juxtaposition?
-Incompatible or inappropriate things are placed together - seem ludicrous - or where the registers suddenly shift creating comic affect.
-Bathos: a sudden shift in style from the exalted to the ordinary.
Zeugma: a word modifies two or more words and makes different sense or no sense at all ‘he lost his coat, and his temper’.
