Combustion Of Hydrocarbons Flashcards
What is combustion?
a reaction in which fuel hurns in oxygen
What do hydrocarbons produce when they burn?
- CO2
- water
Which hydrocarbons are best for fuels & 3 examples?
- smaller molecule hydrocarbons
- methane, propane + octane
When does complete combustion occur?
When there is sufficient oxygen for fuel to react with
What is the word equation for complete combustion?
fuel + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water
How do we test for the products of combustion?
- condense water in ice bath
- bubble gas into limewater
When does incomplete combustion occur?
When there is an insufficient supply of oxygen for fuel to burn completely
What is the word equation for incomplete combustion?
fuel + oxygen —> carbon monoxide + water
Why is carbon monoxide bad for the body?
- CO binds to haemoglobin instead of oxygen
- starves body of oxygen
