Combustion of fuels Flashcards
What is combustion?
Burning a fuel in oxygen to release carbon dioxide and water.
How much oxygen does complete combustion need?
It requires a lot for element to react fully.
What is the word equation of complete combustion?
hydrocarbon + oxygen – carbon dioxide + water
What is a disadvantage of complete combustion?
Carbon dioxide contributes towards global warming.
How much oxygen does incomplete combustion have?
The supply of oxygen is poor.
What are products of incomplete combustion?
Carbon monoxide, carbon and water.
What is the word equation of incomplete combustion?
hydrocarbon + oxygen – carbon monoxide + carbon + water
What 3 things happen during combustion of hydrocarbon?
- both carbon and hydrogen are oxidised.
- energy is released
- waste products released into atmosphere
What is carbon monoxide?
A poisonous gas which is colourless and odourless. Boilers and gas fires should be serviced regularly for safety.
What can solid particles in the air cause?
Global dimming, by reducing amount of sunlight reaching the Earth’s surface - causes damage to people’s lungs.
What happens when fuels burning reach high temperature?
Nitrogen in the air can react with oxygen to form nitrogen oxide. These can cause respiratory problems and it can react with rain water to create acid rain.
