Combustion Flashcards
What are exothermic reactions?
A chemical reaction that releases energy. Energy is released as heat or light, for example a gas stove releases its energy as heat.
What are endothermic reactions?
A chemical reaction that absorbs energy. Example is a chemical cold pack, the substances mix and react, absorbing energy from their surroundings cooling them down.
What is the photosynthesis reaction?
The reaction that green plants use to form a sugar known as glucose. It absorbs energy from sunlight.
Carbon dioxide+water=glucose+oxygen
Definition of combustion
A rapid reaction with oxygen that releases energy in the form of heat and / or light.
Example of combustion
A bushfire is a series of combustion reactions, the chemicals in plants burn in oxygen, releasing huge amounts of heat and light as they react.
What gas is always needed for combustion to occur?
Oxygen gas
What is combustion of fossil fuels?
The combustion of Bunsen burners, gas stoves, water heaters and central heating furnaces produce a hot blue flame by burning methane or ethane gas in oxygen. This is combustion of fossil fuels.
