What is the aim of CPI?
all NHS and private practises are subject to practise inspection process
- Health Board for NHS
- HIS for Private
EVERY 3 years
How can you become a DPI? (dental practise inspector)
5 years experience working within a general dental practise
How can you become a DPA? (dental practise advisor)
10 years experience working in a general dental practise
Who carries out routine practise inspections?
DPIs
- undertakes inspections of general dental practises, community and salaried dental service sites
- write reports for each practise inspection
What are the main duties of a DPA?
- provide advice and support to GDPs
- inspection visits (announced or unannounced)
Why might unannounced practise inspections be carried out?
If patient safety concerns have been raised (eg whistleblowing etc)
How are items characterised on the combined practise inspection checklist?
A (essential) *practises must meet all the essential criteria to pass the inspection
B (best practise)

How much notice are practises given before a CPI is carried out?
6-8 weeks notice
How long does a CPI take?
3 to 4 hours
What must dental practises do for the CPI?
- close the practise
- all dentists working in the practise must be available at the time of CPI
- provide a tray containing instruments routinely used
What instruments must a practise provide during a CPI?
- endo file
- handpiece
- non-single use burs
- matrix band
- impression tray
