HUE
name of a colour
- quality that distinguishes one colour from another
TONE/VALUE
hue’s lightness or darkness
CHROMA/INTENSITY
brightness/darkness
- purity and saturation of a colour
PRIMARY
cant be made mixing other colours
- red blue yellow
SECONDRY
made mixing primaries in = amounts
- yellow and blue = green
TERTIARY
secondaries mixed with adjacent primaries
- red-violet; yellow-orange
COLOUR TONE
hues vary in the amount of light they possess (yellow highest, blue lowest)
- tint made by adding white, hue is lighter and has a higher value
- shade made by adding black/darker shades, this darkens hue and lowers the value
COLOUR AND TEMP
every colour has a temp; can change when placed in relation to one another
- orange-red looks hotter when surrounded by cool colours
warm comes out
cool recedes
COLOUR AND EMOTION
colours can evoke emotional responses
- artists can use colours as symbolic elements
SCHEMES
- monochromatic = only 1 colour and its tints and tones
- complimentary = colours directly opp each other on the colour wheel, used to form contrasts
- analogous = colours that border each other on the colour wheel, harmonious scheme
