What is Colophony?
the sap or sticky substance that comes from pine and spruce trees.
What products is colophony used in?
Cosmetics (mascara, lipstick, nail varnish, eyeshadow)
Adhesives (plasters, hydrocolloid dressings, tapes)
Medicines (wart removers, cold sore creams)
Toiletries (soaps, hair removing wax, floss, suncream)
Household items (grease removers for clothes)
Recreational (sport racket handles, golf clubs)
Chewing gum
Pine trees, real christmas trees
Foot wear
Paper products
Work products:
- paints
- sealants
- cements
- linoleum, floor coverings and tiles
- printer inks
- sawdust
- asphalt products
- grease and lubricants
- vet medicines
- waterproofing agents
What is a repeat open application test?
A method of testing for allergic contact dermatitis
(delayed-type allergy or type-4 hypersensitivity)
Steps:
1/ Identify a patch of hairless skin where there is no dermatitis and that has not recently been exposed to the sun.
2/ Apply the product to an area approximately 5 cm by 5 cm.
3/ If the product is a cleanser or shampoo, wash it off a minute or so later.
4/ Reapply the product to the same patch of skin twice a day for a week
Postiive test = reaction at the site of application (dermatitis, erythema, itching etc)
Any dermatitis arising at the test site may be treated with topical steroid and emollients.
