Colonization Test by Gabble Flashcards
The difference between a colony (colonization) and imperialism. In other words, what makes a colony, a colony?
Colonization: The action or process of settling among and establishing control over the indigenous people of an area.
Imperialism: A policy of extending a country’s power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
An example of colonization is when England went to the Americas to claim land but the people in control of that land are also in control of another country/land, in this case England.
New Spain (Which was the largest, where were they located, what were their relationships with Natives, etc.)
New Spain was located in Mexico, Central America and South America. They were the largest, controlling the most and in the Americas
New France (Which was the largest, where were they located, what were their relationships with Natives, etc.)
New France was located in North America controlling a lot of land In North America. New France allied with the Natives by trading with them
British Colonies (Which was the largest, where were they located, what were their relationships with Natives, etc.)
The British Colonies controlled the east coast with their thirteen colonies. Natives were concerned with the growing population of the Colonies.
Native Americans’ relationships with the new colonies (what happened to the Natives?)
Natives allied with people that helped them. (You help me, I help you)
The big concern of Natives was the growing population of the British communities
At the same time, Native population declined due to diseases
Puritans (beliefs and wants)
When they came to America, they wanted religious freedom. They wanted their religion to more closely follow the bible. They had the first Thanksgiving and were hypocrites.
Jamestown
Picked a spot closer to a river for more success. It was the first permanent colony. They were lazy until John Smith came back and he led them to success.
Located in Virginia.
Roanoke
Was the first attempt at colonizing the Americas. They disappeared after John White came back
Located in North Carolina
Plymouth
Third English settlement
Looking for religious freedom
Rough winter but were taught by natives how to farm, fish and get syrup from the trees
As their crops thrived, they harvested them and hosted a big feast with the natives, hosting the first Thanksgiving.
Located in Massachusetts
The Mayflower Compact
An agreement and government between the Plymouth settlers (Pilgrims) with rules
Just know all pilgrims were puritans but not all puritans are pilgrims.
Puritan Dissenters (Thomas Hooker, Roger Williams, & Anne Hutchinson)
The Puritans founded Massachusetts and Plymouth
Roger Williams founded Rhode Island as a refuge for people that wanted religious freedom
Thomas Hooker left Massachusetts because he thought the government had too much power so founded the Connecticut colony
Anne Hutchinson was a trash talker so she got banished from Massachusetts so she ended up moving to Rhode Island
New England Colonies (What were their economies like, what colonies belonged to each colonial region, land features, diversity, etc.)
Economy: Trades, fishing, wood and shipbuilding. Long winters prevented farming
Land features: Stony, thin and could not support large scale farms. Lots of trees
Colonies: New Hampshire: Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island
Diversity: Most were white, English and very religious (Lack of diversity is all you need to know really)
Middle Colonies (What were their economies like, what colonies belonged to each colonial region, land features, diversity, etc.)
Economy: Livestock, fishing, farming and the “breadbasket colony” (cuz they made lots of grain)
Land features: Good for agriculture with lots of rivers and harbor bays
Colonies: New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania
Diversity: Very diverse
Southern colonies (What were their economies like, what colonies belonged to each colonial region, land features, diversity, etc.)
Economy: Cash crops, crops and rice was what they farmed and traded slave labor
Land features: Lots of farmland and plantations
Colonies: North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, Georgia and Virginia
Diversity: Not as diverse as middle but more diverse than New England colonies
The Triangular Slave Trade
England sent manufactured goods such as guns, cloth and cash to West Africa and North America
Slaves and gold were sent to the Americas from West Africa. Slaves and ivory were sent to Europe from West Africa
Rum and tobacco was sent from the Americas to Africa. Cotton, molasses, rum and tobacco were sent to Europe from the Americas
Indentured servants
Poor farmers who were promised land in exchange for around 5 years of labor. They went to the Americans and got scammed and became slaves instead.
Middle Passage
Part of the Triangular Slave trade. This brought Africans to the Americas in horrible conditions. Some did not survive and those who did were sold into slavery.
