Significance - Britain’s assertion to the colonists that they have the authority to tax them and that they are more powerful.
The Townshend Duties

what is it - the revenue from the tax revenue acts was used to pay the salaries of governors and royal officials.
Significance - it took away the control governors used to have for the colonies to ensure their loyalty to Britain.
Boycotts

What are they - because of the Townshend Duties on British products, colonials imposed boycotts to cripple British trade.
Significance - British responded with propaganda, beatings and vandalism.
Daughters of Liberty

Year: happened throughout the entire revolution
Who are they: dissatisfied with the tyranny in Britain, so they were women who organised boycotts to avoid buying British goods. They created American products instead.
Significance: women became apart of the anti-British efforts.

what is it - famous propaganda written by Samuel Adams, calling the Townshend Duties unconstitutional and called British’s actions illegal.
Significance - British gov required all assemblies to refuse to support it > Boston refused > British dissolved Massachusetts colonial assembly.

Year - 1770
what is it - soldiers deployed by Captain Preston to keep White safe from mob, resulting in a soldier and 5 deaths.
Significance - Sons of Liberty used it as propaganda against the British.
Views - John Adams defended British soldiers saying the firing was provoked and it was unreasonable to blame them.
Boston Tea Party

What is it - At this point, tea still had tax as a symbol of power to the British. While Samuel Adams held a town meeting of 6000 people, 50 men dressed up as Native Americans and quietly dumped 342 chests of tea into harbour from ships.
Significance - Praised by John Adams, condemned by others.
