What is a polyp?
Small clump of cells that form in lining of the colon (may be stalk like)
Are colon polyps common?
Yes, prevalence of 30% in adults 50+ y/o
Incidence of colon polyps in men vs women?
Men have slightly greater risk
Increased incidence of colon polyps in what nations?
Industrialized nations
Risk factors for developing colon polyps?
High fat diet, diet high in red meat, low fiber diet, cigarette smoking, obesity, genetics
What are hyperplastic polyps?
Small polyps located in rectum or sigmoid colon
Malignancy potential of hyperplastic polyps?
None
Size of hyperplastic polyps?
Usually less than 5mm (small)
2/3 polyps are what type?
Adenomatous
Malignancy potential of adenomatous polyps?
Some potential, most will have some degree of dysplasia
The larger the adenomatous polyp (>1cm), the higher risk for what?
Cancer
Can you distinguish between hyperplastic and adenomatous polyps?
No, need a biopsy
Are polyps usually symptomatic?
No
If polyps are large they may ulcerate and cause what?
Hematochezia (passage of fresh blood from anus)
