Collision Theory Flashcards
What is activation energy:
The amount of energy required for two colliding particles to react
What is collision theory:
The RoR depends on the frequency of collisions between reacting particles and how much activation energy is required for the colliding particles to react
Why does temperature affect the RoR:
Heating the particles makes them move faster so they collide with more energy and with more frequency so they are more likely to collide and more likely to react when they collide
Why does concentration affect the RoR:
If a solution is concentrated it has more particles in it that can react so they are more likely to collide with another reactant
Why does pressure affect the RoR:
When pressure is increased, more particles are in a smaller space so they are more likely to collide
Why does surface area affect the RoR:
The more particles are exposed, they more they can be collided with so the more collisions happen
Why does using a catalyst affect the RoR:
A catalyst lowers the activation energy required for collisions to be successful, so more collisions are successful
