College 3 Flashcards
Causal theories of aggresive personality
- social learning: children learn by observing and modeling beahvior they see in their environment.
- genetic: genetic predisporition to violence prone personlity.
The problem of construct validity
Does a scientific test actually measure what it claims to measure.
Theoretical construct
If there is a consistent pattern in the behavior that’s supporsed to correlate with the unobservable thing you’re interested in, we get reason to think our measuremnts have latched onto some stable, real feature of the world.
Realism
Scientific theories describe a real independent world, even if we can’t see everything directly.
Instrumentalism (non-realism)
Scientific theories are just tools for making prediction, not necessarily true descriptions of reality.
Ideal types (Max Weber)
A simplified model taht highlights key features of something while ignorming others.
Two levels of explainging behavior (Alfred Schütz)
- common sense thinking
- social-scientific models
Postulate of adequacy
Science mus tbe understandble for the actor himself as well as his fellow-men.
Thin/thick descriptions (Clifford Geetz)
Thin description: simple factual statement.
Thick description: explains the meaning and context behind the action.
