COLLECTION TECHNIQUES Flashcards
Effective device for collecting small insects
Aspirator
Made of durable fabric, preferably white, attached to a frame of about 1 meter
Beat Sheets
Designed for collecting butterflies and other flying insects
Aerial nets
Used for gathering insects from the water
Aquatic Nets
Made of thick fabric used in the compilation of most types of insects on crops such as wheat and clover ring, potatoes, herbs, and grasses
Sweeping nets
Used for collecting epigeal or soil surface-dwelling arthropods
Pitfall Traps
Tent-like traps made of fine mesh material
Malaise Traps
A piece of screen extended between two poles or trees, that insects fly into, whereupon they fall into a pan or container filled with a preservative
Flight Interception Trap (FIT)
Can be applied to the ground, on trees, ropes, or elsewhere, and insects can be collected directly from them
Bait Traps
Used for collecting nocturnal insects that are active and flying at night
Blacklight Traps
A paper coated with an adhesive, and placed on the pillar to the desired height then, stud and identify the insects stuck
Sticky Traps
A handled device with a battery-powered fan that sucks in arthropods through a hose and collection vial
Aspirator
Used for capturing delicate or immobile specimens from surfaces like leaves or bark
Aspirator
A net with a fine mesh bag mounted on a circular frame and attached to a handle
Sweep Net
Swept through vegetation to capture flying arthropods disturbed by the movement
Sweep Net
A large sheet of fabric is held under vegetation or branches while they are disturbed, causing arthropods to fall onto the sheet for collection
Beat Sheet
A container buried in the ground with a smooth rim at ground level
Pitfall Trap
Where arthropods fall in and are unable to climb out
Pitfall Trap
Used for ground-dwelling species
Pitfall Trap
A funnel filled with leaf litter or other substrate, with a light or heat source above
Berlese Funnel
Where arthropods seek cooler, moister conditions move down the funnel and into a collection container
Berlese Funnel
Lights that emit ultraviolet radiation, attract night-flying insects like moths
Blacklight Traps
Traps baited with food or other attractants to lure specific arthropods, like fruit flies or dung beetles
Bait Traps
A surface coated with a sticky material that traps flying insects upon contract
Sticky Traps
A vertical barrier with nets on either side interrupts the flight path of insects
Flight Intersection Trap
Used for capturing specific groups like butterflies or mosquitoes
Flight Interception Trap (FIT)
A tent-like structure with netting walls and a collecting bottle at the bottom
Malaise Traps
Where arthropods attracted to the light enter and become trapped
